Which Recipe Notes Plan Is Right for Me?

A simple guide to choosing between the Free plan, Pro (Monthly/Annual), and Family (Monthly/Annual) plans in Recipe Notes.

Which Recipe Notes Plan Is Right for Me?

Recipe Notes is free to download and free to use. Most people never need to pay us anything — the free plan already stores unlimited recipes with cloud backup and sync. This guide helps you decide whether you should stay on Free, upgrade to Pro, or choose the Family plan.

Prices shown below are in USD for the United States. Local prices may differ — the App Store or Play Store always shows your exact price before you confirm.

The 30-second version

  • Cook casually, small collection?Free is plenty.
  • Cook a lot, want everything unlocked for yourself?Pro (Annual) — best value, about $2.92/month.
  • Flexibility over savings?Pro (Monthly).
  • Share one subscription with your household?Family — one plan for up to 6 people across iPhone, iPad, and Android.

All paid plans include a free 7-day trial. You can cancel any time during the trial at no cost.

Free — $0 forever

The free plan is designed to be genuinely useful, not a demo.

You get:

  • Unlimited recipes with cloud backup & sync
  • The full core app and all import methods
  • Up to 2 categories to organize recipes
  • 10 web/social imports per day (Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Facebook, websites)
  • 5 photo/document imports per day
  • Basic meal planning (2 days)
  • Up to 5 grocery lists

Pick Free if:

  • You cook occasionally and keep a small recipe library
  • Two categories (e.g. "Meals" and "Desserts") is enough for how you organize
  • You rarely import more than 10 recipes on any single day

If you ever hit the category limit or run out of daily imports, that's the signal that Pro will make your life easier.

Pro (Monthly) — $4.99 / month

Unlocks everything on a month-to-month basis. Cancel anytime.

Pick Pro (Monthly) if:

  • You want to try the unlocked experience without committing for a year
  • You cook seasonally and only need Pro during busy months (holidays, meal-prep phases)
  • You're planning to switch to the Annual plan later once you're sure

Pro (Annual) — $34.99 / year (best value)

Same features as Pro (Monthly), but billed yearly — works out to about $2.92/month, roughly 40% off the monthly price.

You unlock (on top of Free):

  • Unlimited categories — organize by cuisine, meal type, family member, season, diet, whatever you like
  • Unlimited web/social and photo/document imports
  • Full meal planning (unlimited days, week & month views)
  • Smart grocery list merging — duplicates combine automatically
  • Custom category icons — design your own icons for each category
  • Unlimited grocery lists and search results

Pick Pro (Annual) if:

  • You already know you'll use Recipe Notes long-term
  • You want the lowest per-month price on an individual plan
  • You import recipes regularly from Instagram, TikTok, websites, or your photo library

Family (Monthly) — $12.99 / month

One subscription that unlocks Pro for up to 6 people — you plus 5 invited family members. Monthly billing.

Family (Annual) — $69.99 / year

Exactly the same features as Family (Monthly), just billed yearly. Works out to about $5.83/month for the whole household, or roughly $11.67/member/year.

What both Family plans include

  • All Pro features for 6 members total — unlimited categories, imports, meal planning, custom icons, smart grocery merging
  • Works across iPhone, iPad, and Android — mixed-device households are fully supported
  • Shared family recipe collections — everyone sees the same recipes
  • Shared family meal plan and grocery list — plan and shop together
  • Invite via link — no Apple ID sharing, no Apple Family Sharing setup required
  • Every member can still toggle back to their own Personal space at any time

Monthly vs Annual for Family: same features, different billing. The only difference is price — Annual is cheaper per month, Monthly gives you more flexibility.

Pick a Family plan if:

  • You live with a partner, parents, kids, or roommates who also cook
  • You want one shared grocery list and meal plan for the whole household
  • You have a mix of iPhone, iPad, and Android devices at home
  • Even just 2 people using it makes Family cheaper than 2 individual Pro subscriptions

Frequently asked

Do I lose my recipes if I cancel Pro? No. Recipes always stay in your account. If you downgrade to Free, the only thing that happens is the free-plan limits (like 2 categories) come back. Your recipes are untouched.

Can I switch plans later? Yes. You can upgrade, downgrade, or switch between Monthly and Annual at any time from the App Store or Play Store.

Can I cancel during the 7-day trial? Yes, and you won't be charged. Cancel from your device: iOS → Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Recipe Notes. Android → Play Store → Subscriptions → Recipe Notes.

Is the Family plan tied to Apple Family Sharing? No. Family invites work through a link inside Recipe Notes, so your household members don't need to share an Apple ID or set up Apple Family Sharing. It also works across iOS and Android.
