The Family Recipe Problem

Handwritten recipe cards fade, get damaged, or lost over time

Family recipes scattered across notebooks, recipe boxes, and old emails

No easy way to share recipes with siblings, cousins, or children

Grandmother's secret recipes could be lost forever when she's gone

How Recipe Notes Helps Preserve Family Recipes

Digitize Handwritten Recipes

Take a photo of handwritten recipe cards and Recipe Notes extracts the text automatically. Preserve the original by adding the photo, then type or edit as needed.

Automatic Cloud Backup

Every family recipe is automatically backed up to the cloud. Even if your phone is lost or damaged, your family's culinary heritage is safe forever.

Organize by Generation

Create collections like "Grandma's Recipes", "Mom's Holiday Favorites", or "Family Treasures". Tag recipes by who taught you, occasion, or family tradition.

Shared Family Kitchen

With a Family plan, one subscription unlocks Pro for up to 6 members. Everyone joins a shared Family space where recipes, meal plans, and grocery lists stay in sync — and you can toggle back to your Personal space any time.

How to Start Organizing Family Recipes

Step 1

Download Recipe Notes (Free)

Get Recipe Notes free from the App Store. The free plan stores unlimited recipes with cloud backup and sync — perfect for getting started. An optional Pro or Family plan unlocks unlimited categories, imports, and shared household cooking when you're ready.

Step 2

Create a Family Collection

Open Recipe Notes and create your first collection. Name it something meaningful like "Grandma Rose's Recipes" or "Smith Family Treasures". You can create as many collections as you need - one for each family member or occasion.

Step 3

Add Your First Recipe

There are several ways to add family recipes:

  • Photo Recognition: Take a photo of a handwritten recipe card
  • Type It In: Manually enter recipes from scratch
  • From Text: Copy and paste from emails or documents
Step 4

Add Family Context

Make recipes special by adding notes: "Grandma always doubled the vanilla", "We make this every Christmas Eve", or "Uncle Mike's secret technique". Include photos of the original recipe card or family cooking together.

Step 5

Invite Family to a Shared Kitchen

With Recipe Notes 3.2 Family Sharing you can go beyond one-off sharing — create a Family space everyone joins with one tap, so all heirloom recipes, weekly meal plans, and grocery lists stay in sync for the whole household.

  • Tap "Join Family" on the new Me page in v3.2.1 for a one-tap onboarding
  • Everyone sees the same recipes, meal plan, and grocery list instantly
  • Toggle back to your Personal space any time without losing anything
  • Prefer to share one recipe? The classic share-sheet export still works.

Yes! You can add multiple photos to each recipe. Many users include photos of the original handwritten recipe card to preserve the memory alongside the typed version.

Is there a limit to how many family recipes I can save?

The number of recipes is always unlimited — on both the free plan and Pro. The free plan organizes them with up to 2 categories; Pro and Family plans unlock unlimited categories, unlimited imports per day, and shared household collections. See the full Free vs Pro comparison.

All your recipes are automatically backed up to the cloud. If you lose your phone or get a new one, simply sign in to Recipe Notes and all your family recipes will be there.

Can family members who don't have the app still view recipes?
